The Intel generation spans 2016 to 2020, every model with a Retina display, Touch Bar and Thunderbolt 3. Two reasons still speak for them today: Windows can be installed as a second system via Boot Camp, and external graphics cards (eGPU) are supported.

  • 13-inch: portable, with integrated Intel graphics, enough for office work, photo editing and programming.
  • 15-inch: almost always with an additional AMD Radeon graphics card, stronger for 3D, video editing and Windows gaming.
  • 16-inch (2019): the largest workspace, also with Radeon graphics.

What keyboard design do the Intel MacBook Pros have?

There's an important difference here. Models from 2016 to mid-2019 use the very flat "butterfly" keyboard. From late 2019 (on the 16-inch model) and mid-2020 (on the 13-inch model), Apple reverted to the "Magic Keyboard" with a classic scissor mechanism. If you type a lot and value a softer typing feel, we particularly recommend the 16-inch model or the 13-inch model from 2020.

How do the 13-inch and 15/16-inch models differ in performance?

The 13-inch MacBook Pro is designed for portability and usually uses the integrated Intel graphics card (Iris Plus), which is perfectly adequate for office applications, image editing, and programming. The larger 15-inch and 16-inch models, however, almost always feature an additional, dedicated graphics card (AMD Radeon). This makes them significantly more powerful for 3D rendering, complex video editing, or gaming under Windows.

Do current macOS versions run on Intel Macs?

Only up to macOS 26 Tahoe – according to Apple, the last macOS version for Intel Macs. Among the Intel MacBook Pros, Tahoe only runs on the 16-inch model (2019) and the 13-inch model (2020, four Thunderbolt 3 ports); the other models from 2018 onwards end with macOS 15 Sequoia, older ones with earlier versions. Since the Intel architecture (x86) is still the global standard, almost all programs and apps run smoothly and without emulation on these devices.
