  • You type a lot: pick the 2017 or the Early 2020 model, both with a comfortable scissor keyboard.

  • You want a sharp display: from Late 2018 onwards, every Intel Air has a Retina display.

There are two very good reasons to choose an Intel model. First, the price: These devices are often significantly cheaper than the M-series and still offer enough performance for office work, browsing, and streaming. Second, software compatibility: Intel Macs are the only ones on which you can easily install Windows natively via Boot Camp. So, if you absolutely need Windows on your Mac, this collection is your first choice.

What is the difference between the 2017 MacBook Air and the newer Intel models (2018–2020)?

The 2017 MacBook Air is the "classic": It still has the old design with wider bezels, the illuminated Apple logo on the back, and, most importantly, many ports such as USB-A, an SD card slot, and MagSafe 2. The models from 2018 onward (Retina) have the modern, thinner design, a significantly sharper Retina display, Touch ID (fingerprint sensor), and rely exclusively on USB-C / Thunderbolt 3 ports.

What keyboard design do these models have?

Here you need to look closely. The 2017 MacBook Air uses the classic, very popular scissor mechanism. The 2018 and 2019 models use the flatter butterfly keyboard. The "Early 2020" MacBook Air (Intel) returned to the reliable scissor mechanism ("Magic Keyboard"). If a perfect typing feel is important to you, we particularly recommend the 2017 model or the Early 2020 model.

Do current macOS versions still run on these devices?

No. Current macOS versions require an Apple Silicon chip on the MacBook Air. The MacBook Air Early 2020 (Intel) receives updates up to macOS 15 Sequoia, the 2018 and 2019 models up to macOS 14 Sonoma, and the 2017 model up to macOS 12 Monterey. The devices nevertheless remain usable for everyday tasks.

How good is the battery life of a used MacBook Air Intel?
