Here's how to transfer your data to your new Mac
Instructions for all Mac devices from macOS X 10.7 (2011) onwards
Switching to a new Mac is straightforward. Apple provides a reliable tool called Migration Assistant, which allows you to securely transfer user accounts, apps, documents, and settings.
In this guide, we'll show you the easiest methods to transfer your data to a new Mac.
Requirements
- Your old and your new Mac are switched on
-
Both devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
(alternatively via cable or backup) - You know the password for your user account.
-
Ideally, both Macs should be connected to a power source or charged to at least 50%.
Recommended method: Data transfer using the migration assistant
The Migration Assistant is Apple's recommended standard solution. It transfers users, applications, files, and system settings almost completely.
Here's how to transfer data from Mac to Mac:
-
Open the Migration Assistant on both Macs.
(Programs → Utilities → Migration Assistant) . - On the new Mac, select "From a Mac".
- On the old Mac, also select "To another Mac" and confirm.
- A security code will appear on both devices; compare and confirm it.
- Choose which content should be transferred (users, programs, files, settings).
-
Start the transfer.
Both Macs should remain switched on during this time. The duration depends on the amount of data and the connection.
Tip: For large amounts of data, a wired connection (e.g., Thunderbolt) is recommended.
Data transfer from a Time Machine backup
If you no longer have your old Mac available, you can also restore your data from a Time Machine backup.
Here's how to proceed:
- Connect your Time Machine backup drive to the new Mac.
- Start your Mac and begin the initial setup.
- Select "Restore from a Time Machine backup".
- Select the desired backup based on date and time.
-
Decide which data should be transferred and start the recovery process.
This method is particularly suitable if you have been creating regular backups.
Optional: Data transfer from Windows to Mac
Switching from Windows to macOS is also possible.
- Apple provides the Windows Migration Assistant for this purpose.
- Among other things, user accounts, documents, photos, emails and contacts will be transferred.
- The programs will then need to be reinstalled.
- Proceed in the same way as if you were transferring from one Mac to another, except in the Migration Assistant you select “From a Windows PC” and follow the further instructions.
