Here's how to transfer your data to your new iPhone
Instructions for iPhone 8 and newer
Switching to a new iPhone is easier than ever. Apple offers several reliable ways to transfer your data, such as apps, photos, contacts, and settings.
In this guide, we will show you the current and recommended methods for iPhone 8 and newer.
Requirements for successful data transfer
- Your old and your new iPhone are switched on.
- Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are enabled
- Ideally, both devices should be connected to a power source or charged to at least 50%.
-
You know the code of your old iPhone as well as your Apple ID.
Recommended method: Transfer data directly from iPhone to iPhone (Quick Start)
The simplest and fastest method is the quick start with direct iPhone-to-iPhone transfer. This feature is available from iOS 11 onwards.
Here's how the quick start works:
- Place your new iPhone next to your old iPhone.
- The old device automatically displays a message indicating that a new iPhone needs to be set up.
- An animation will appear on your new iPhone. Point your old iPhone's camera at it and wait for the confirmation to appear.
- Enter the code from your old iPhone on the new device.
- Set up Face ID or Touch ID.
-
Then select "Transfer data from iPhone".
During the transfer, both devices should be close to each other and not switched off. The duration depends on the amount of data and the Wi-Fi connection.
Restoring from an iCloud backup
If you no longer have your old iPhone or don't want to use the direct transfer, you can also restore your data from an iCloud backup.
Here's how to proceed:
- Start setting up your new iPhone. Continue until you reach the point where you are asked how you want to transfer your data.
- Select "Restore from iCloud Backup".
- Sign in with your Apple ID.
- Select the desired backup based on date and size.
-
Stay connected to Wi-Fi until the recovery process is complete.
Note regarding iCloud storage:
Every Apple ID includes 5 GB of free iCloud storage. For a complete backup (especially with photos and videos), more storage is usually needed. Apple offers paid iCloud plans starting at just a few francs per month.
Optional: Recovery via Mac (Finder)
If neither the quick start nor the iCloud backup alternative is suitable for you, you can also back up your iPhone via your Mac and transfer the data.
- The backup on the Mac is created in Finder.
- Open the Finder app on your Mac and connect your iPhone to the Mac using the cable.
- Your iPhone will now appear in the sidebar under Places.
- Click on your iPhone in the sidebar
- You are now in the iPhone menu and can create a backup of your device.
- Once the backup is created, you can unplug your old iPhone and connect your new one to your Mac.
- Your new device will now appear in the sidebar under Places.
- Click on your new iPhone; you will be asked at the beginning if you want to use your device as a new iPhone, after which you will have the option to restore your iPhone from the backup you just created.
